Cape Girardeau's Asphalt Overlay Program Begins This Month, To Run Through October

The Asphalt Overlay Program, one of Cape Girardeau’s street maintenance programs, is expected to begin this month and run through October. The Transportation Trust Fund program, which is approved by voters every 5 years since 1990, uses revenue to lay new streets, and maintain existing streets in the city.

Cape Girardeau City engineer Casey Brunke assures the streets won’t be closed for an extended period of time.

“When the milling machine is going through and milling off the areas that need to be milled, there might be a few minutes.” Says Brunke. “And then, once they come back and place the hot mix asphalt- we don't want it to melt people's tires- once it reaches a certain temperature, we’ll open it back up to traffic.”

Brunke reminds drivers to slow down and pay attention while driving through work zones.
