Cape Splash Hopes To Set World Record

The World's Largest Swimming Lesson

You can learn how to swim and also be in the Guinness Book of World Records next week. The City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will take part in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson.

The event will take place Tuesday at 10:00 am at Cape Splash, and the goal is to have over 25,000 participants worldwide.

Patrick Watson is the Aquatic Supervisor for the City of CapeGirardeauParks and Recreation Department. He said this swim lesson isn’t just happening in Cape Girardeau.

“This whole activity is actually taking place around the country,” Watson said. “The same time that they are doing it, we are going to be doing it. And it goes throughout the whole country, so exactly from minute to minute, tons of thousands of people across the country are going to be taking place in this activity at the same time. It’s pretty exciting to be apart of.”

Watson hopes that this event will also help to promote water safety.

“This area has so many aquatic offerings that having a general concept of safety around the water, as well as being confident to swim for safety reasons, lifesaving reasons, as well as just for fun, is extremely, extremely vital,” Watson said.

If a child does not learn to swim before the third grade, he or she likely never will.

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is free to the public and registration will begin at 9:30 am on Tuesday.
