Cape's River City Players to Present Family Comedy

Cape Girardeau's community theatre group, The River City Players, will offer a family comedy for their next performance at Port Cape Girardeau.

"A Bench in the Sun" is about two longtime friends, Harold and Burt, that live in a retirement home. They spend their days bickering on a bench in the garden, in the spirit of "The Odd Couple" or "Grumpy Old Men."

When a once famous movie star moves in, the two men work to win her attention. Plus, word gets out that the retirement home may be sold. The three then team-up to help prevent the sale.

Brenda Ferguson is directing the play and she says that rehearsals began in late April and have been going very well because the actors have a great chemistry. She said, "Just the chemistry has just melded, they get along so well and they're old-time friends and they've been in plays together."

One of the challenges with the production was finding a bench for the actors to sit on during the production. They needed to find a bench that was big enough for them to sit on for the two hour production and it needed to be comfortable as well. They searched Cape Girardeau but couldn't find one that met their needs. Ferguson said that their construction designer saved the day by building a bench for the actors to use.

"A Bench in the Sun" will be performed  July 10-13 in Downtown Cape Girardeau.
