The St. Louis Cardinals and the Washington Nationals played the first postseason baseball game in the nation’s capitol in 79 years on Tuesday, and the Cardinals’ Pete Kozma made sure the visitors would walk away with a win.

The Cardinals’ rookie shortstop blasted a three run home run off Washington pitcher Edwin Jackson in the 2nd inning. Kozma’s home run was the biggest hit in a game the Cardinals easily won with a final score of eight to nothing.

Veteran starting pitcher Chris Carpenter worked in and out of trouble during his six innings. Three St. Louis relievers finished off the final three frames without incident.

Kozma has made his presence known through the young postseason. He was at the center of the infamous “infield fly rule” call during the Wild Card Game and his costly error in Game 1 of the Division Series eventually led to a Washington win. But he helped ensure Cardinal victories in Games 2 and 3 with his base-running prowess and timely hitting.

The Cardinals now have a 2 to 1 lead in the best of five series.

Game 4 is this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Kyle Lohse will take the mound for St. Louis. The Nationals will pin their hopes on left hander Ross Detwiler.
