The Glenn House in Cape Girardeau is offering Holiday Tours during the Christmas season. Starting the Friday after Thanksgiving until the Sunday after Christmas, tours will be offered every Saturday and Sunday.

The theme for this year’s Christmas at the Glenn House is “Home for the Holidays” and the idea behind it is to evoke in visitors memories of celebrating Christmas during their childhood.

Bonnie Chaudoir is in charge of Christmas at the Glenn House and said the house looks spectacular during the holiday season. With the decorations, each room gets its own personality and its own theme.

“We have a group of volunteers who come in and help change the house from a lovely old Victorian home into a lovely old Victorian home dressed for the holidays,” said Chaudoir.

She added that the dining room and parlor have been professionally designed this year. During the Victorian era, peacocks were an important decoration element and Chaudoir said a specially designed peacock tree will also be part of this year’s decorations.

Tour hours will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and visitors can stroll through the house at their own pace. Volunteers will be dressed in Victorian clothing and ready to answer any questions. After their visit, people are invited to the Carriage House where Christmas cookies and beverages will be served.

On Friday, December 12th and Saturday, December 20th, the Glenn House will offer Candlelight Tours from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where people will be invited to see the house in a completely different way.

“The house takes on a whole different atmosphere in the evenings,” said Chaudoir. “We go with candlelight in 90 percent of the rooms. We put luminaries up on the porches and in the frontyard.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance with a dollar discount for any of the tours at the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau or from any member of the Historical Association’s Board of Directors. Tickets can also be purchased at the Glenn House’s entrance.

“We also do special tours for groups of ten or more, you just need to call ahead and make a reservation so that we can open the house up and have a guide there for you,” Chaudoir said.
