An Evening of Storytelling with Donald Davis & Dolores Hydock

Cape Girardeau is the city where the river turns a thousand tales and to go along with that theme, Cape Girardeau will once again host two renowned storytellers.

Cape Girardeau has hosted storytellers for five years now and in 2013, organizers are taking a different approach to the storytelling events to fit the busy schedules of those that would like to attend.

Chuck Martin is the Director of the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, he says this year the focus will be on three two-hour evening events rather than a three-day festival. He says, "We're calling those 'An Evening of Storytelling with' and then we're listing what storytellers we happen to have." They will be held in January, May and September.

The first event is January 18 and features Donald Davis and Dolores Hydock. Davis comes from the North Carolina region where his family dates back in the area to the 1780s. He relies on his family history and those stories that were handed down from generation to generation. Hydock grew up in Pennsylvania but now lives in Alabama and tells stories about life including family, food, true love and more.

Martin notes that you really have to experience storytelling to fully appreciate it.

The event takes place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children and are available at RiverCampusEvents.com or by calling (573) 651-2265.

Dan is a 1994 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University. He majored in radio and minored in political science. He spent three of his four years at Southeast working as a student announcer at KRCU – the beginning of his radio career.
