Cape Girardeau fire crews responded to a fire on the roof of Southeast Missouri State University’s Dempster Hall on Monday afternoon.

No injuries were reported.

Southeast vice president Kathy Mangels said the fire broke out around 1:37 p.m.

“Within 15 minutes, I know in looking at my own clock that the fire department had not only responded but had the flames out that were visible from the ground,” Mangels said. “So [it was] a wonderful response from our Cape fire department.”

Mangels said the building evacuated and there were no injuries.

“We actually had some individuals outside who noticed the flames, did the proper and alerted the campus police. The fire alarm worked as it should. Everyone got out,” Mangels said. “Everyone complied and got out in a very quick fashion. Being summer, there’s not a lot of people in the building, so that is good news.”

Mangels says the fire stayed on the roof and did not breach into the interior.

Classes Dempster Hall are cancelled Tuesday, and employees there should not report to work.

The building houses the university’s College of Business and is the temporary home of the university’s senior administration while Academic Hall undergoes its restoration.
