HUD Announcement Leaves Cairo Residents With Uncertain Future

An ongoing battle between Cairo residents living in rapidly deteriorating, bug and rodent infested public housing and the Alexander County Housing Authority accused of mismanaging federal funds and alleged civil rights violations came to a head last week.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development who took over the housing authority a year ago announced that nearly 185 families would be forced to move. KRCU's Marissanne Lewis-Thompson spoke with investigative reporter Molly Parker with Southern Illinoisan newspaper in Carbondale who has been covering the story since the beginning.
