About 3,500 animals are taken in at the Humane Society in Cape Girardeau, Mo., every year. To help benefit animals, the organization is holding its first grocery shopping spree giveaway.

“We’re really excited, “ office manager Tracy Poston said. “This is our first ever grocery shopping spree and we’ve teamed up with Food Giant. The raffle tickets are going to be $10 a piece or three for $25.”

The winner of the raffle will have eight minutes to load their shopping cart full of food.

Some restrictions apply.

The winner cannot choose alcohol or tobacco products. They can also only choose two of the same type of product.

The second place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to Buchheit’s and third place will receive a $25 gift certificate to Wings etc.

Poston said the money will go towards aiding the animals in the shelter and purchasing Purina dog food.

“It is hard to keep our doors open,” Poston said. “Years past we’ve seen a decrease in donations this time of year. I can remember where we had years where we had everybody dropping food off and really helping this time of season and we’d get a lot of stuff that would last us for several months and the past couple years that hasn’t been happening.”

Tickets can be purchased through the Humane Society, Food Giant, Mississippi Mutts and Busch Pet Products.

Tickets will be sold until Dec. 7 and a winner will be chosen the following day. The shopping spree will take place Dec. 16.
