Karstens Named OVC Defensive Player of the Week

Southeast Athletics
Maddi Karstens

Southeast Missouri junior defender Maddi Kartsens has been named this week's Adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.

Karstens played the full 180 minutes on defense last week for Southeast. The Redhawks' back line allowed only one goal to Milwaukee then turned around and shut out Green Bay. Karstens assisted on the game-winning goal of Sunday's game when she dropped a free kick into the box from 50 yards out for Esmie Gonzales to net the first goal of the game.

The Redhawk defense has recorded three shutouts in four games this season, allowing just one goal to opponents. Southeast is tied for the league lead this season in goals allowed. The Redhawk defense has surrendered only 25 shots this season, holding opponents to a .040 shot percentage while only putting eight on goal.

This is the first weekly conference honor for the St. Charles, Missouri native in her career.

The Redhawks Soccer team returns home on Monday for a special Labor Day Doubleheader that features Redhawks Volleyball and Soccer. Volleyball will host Western Illinois at 4 p.m. inside Houck Field House, followed by soccer vs. ACC-opponent Louisville at 6:30 p.m. on Houck Field. The doubleheader will feature a special Labor Day Cookout in the end zone starting at 5:30 p.m. – the first 500 fans in attendance will enjoy free hot dogs and hamburgers courtesy of Stevie’s Steakburger.
