Left Of The Dial #337 - So Happy To Be Listening

There's new music from Juana Molina, an album titled Halo, and as I mentioned on the show, you'll not hear a better primer on the Argentine musician than what you get from Radiolab

By 1983, jazz legend Alice Coltrane had taken 48 acres that she purchased outside of Los Angeles and established the Sai Anantam Ashram. With little fanfare she had recorded music there and distributed it among the spiritual community by cassette, which was the only way to hear that music until now. The compilation is titled World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda.

Numerous curiosities intersect at The Atomic Bomb! Band, a touring supergroup featuring members of Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, and The Beastie Boys, who perform live the music of Nigerian funk legend William Onyeabor. This project (as does the previously mentioned Alice Coltrane) comes from David Byrne's boutique world music record label Luaka Bop. That label had previously reissued Onyeabor's studio work, and discovered that he was never interested in performing it live himself.  Thus birthed The Atomic Bomb! Band (Performing The Music of William Onyeabor). Here's David Byrne and the band performing live on Fallon

Left of the Dial airs Friday nights from 9-11 and Saturdays from noon-2 on KRCU.
