The New Madrid Chamber of Commerce is continuing their tradition of offering Ghost Tours during the month of October.

The tours will take place during the Friday and Saturday nights this month.

Attendees will visit three historic buildings: the New Madrid County Courthouse, the Hart-Step House, and the Dixie Theater.

The Chamber of Commerce’s Christina McWaters says that this tour is more unique than other ghost tours.

“We let people get a hands on experience,” McWaters said. “We take them into three buildings that we’ve used for that past five years, and that we’ve had things happen in, and we let them play with some of the equipment that we have that you might see on Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures.”

McWaters recalls an incident where a groups was able to make contact with a ghost.

“And I said ‘Well, Ruby, I’ve brought someone here to play with you. Her name is Skyler. Can you come out and play?’ and Skyler said “Ruby, I am here. Would you like to play with me?’ and when she did the K-2 meter lit up, and it had never happened before,” McWaters said.

A K-2 Meter is an Electromagnetic Field Detector that measures a fluctuation in electric energy of an area. But some people believe they devices can be used detect energy of a ghost.

McWaters say this year the tour will also feature a new piece of equipment the group can utilize. A picture of Ruby Hampton, a girl who died in the Hart-Step house at age fourteen, and her grandmother will also be provided for attendees to see.

Reservations are required in advance by calling (877) 748-5300. Tickets are 10 dollars.
