An Opportunity to Learn Something New

If you are the type of person that has a desire to learn something new, the Office of Extended and Continuing Education at Southeast Missouri State University may be your best opportunity to learn a new hobby or skill.

Assistant Director Christy Mershon says her division - Continuing Education - focuses on community-based programs such as youth programs. They are non-degree credit offerings available to anyone. Most workshops do not require any pre-requisites. Mershon says, "For the most part if you have an interest you can come to our workshops." Many of the classes are held on the main campus in Cape Girardeau but others are held at various locations throughout the region.

There are a variety of programs available this fall including a new night photography program. There are dance classes and many halloween-related activities. A very popular program called "Halloween Science Night" returns on October 20 thanks to a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health. The program is free and features 18 different rooms with themed activites and candy.

"We try to do a little bit for everyone," Mershon says. Classes related to yoga, working with generation-y, cake decorating, how to live with a gluten intolerance and more are offered to the community.

Mershon welcomes feedback from area residents to help plan topics for future workshops and is always looking for new teachers as well.
