A major employer in Poplar Bluff is moving to Mexico, leaving 500 employees without jobs.

The NORDYNE plant is closing its doors.

The NORDYNE plant produces air conditioning and heating parts. The company will begin moving its manufacturing to Saltillo, Mexico later this year. The Poplar Bluff plant will close by 2014.

NORDYNE Vice President Carol Baker says it was not an easy decision to make.

“Unfortunately, the last several years we’ve seen our industry shrink by about 30 percent and our plants have done a pretty good job of trying to combat a lot of these costs, but it’s not enough.”

Baker says most of NORDYNE’s competitors already have global operations.

“We definitely wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t have to do it,” Baker said. “It’s unfortunate that its something we have to do to stay competitive long term.”

NORDYNE will also transition operation from its Booneville plant to Mexico, which will impact an additional 200 workers. The St. Louis-based company’s plant in Dyersburg, Tennessee will remain open.
