River City Players present "Rumors"

It's a party that goes awry. It was supposed to be a civilized, elegant evening celebrating the anniversary of Charlie and Myra Brock. (Charlie is the Deputy Mayor of New York).

Cape Girardeau's amateur theater group, The River City Players, will present Neil Simon's "Rumors" and allow patrons to take a peak at a crazy evening of mishaps and misunderstandings.

As guests start to arrive, things don't look like they should. "The kitchen staff is gone. Myra (the hostess) is missing and Charlie has shot himself in the head," says director Andrea Shovan.

The play includes a few gunshots and even a few policemen as the evening unfolds. Because Charlie is the Deputy Mayor of New York and because of the status of many of the guests, great effort is placed on keeping up appearances to the media and the police.

Shovan says the players have done a great job in rehearsals for the play but there were some challenges, too. She says, "In the fourth week of rehearsals we lost one our main men, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, for a new job and we're so thrilled for him but we had to replace him." Then later they lost one of their female leads due to an accident. However, Shovan says the cast overcame those challenges and are ready for opening night.

Neil Simon’s “Rumors” will be performed by the River City Players at Port Cape on Thursday, May 16 with a show-only at 7:00. A dinner-show will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 17 & 18th with dinner at 7:00 and the show starting at 8:00.  The show only is $15 and the show with dinner is $35. Reservations can be made with Port Cape at (573) 334-0954.
