SALT Dedicates Memorial to Roger Fields

City of Cape Girardeau

Seniors and Lawmen Together (SALT) are dedicating a memorial to honor the late Roger Fields on Monday, October 13. Fields’ memorial will be adjacent to the existing Law Enforcement Memorial in Cape County Park North.

Fields was the Assistant Chief of Police for the Cape Girardeau Police Department. He passed away March 30, 2014 at the age 50.

Doug Austin, recording secretary of SALT, worked with Fields for many years. He said the ceremony will honor Fields for his efforts in building the Law Enforcement Memorial.

Fields was responsible for researching and developing the memorial that honors officers that lost their lives in the line of duty.

“Although Roger didn’t give his life in the line of duty, he devoted his life to his chosen profession,” Austin said. “He was so instrumental in bringing honor, memory and respect to those fallen police officers and their families, we just thought it was fitting that a marker be placed adjacent to that monument.”

During the ceremony several members of the community will speak and James Humphrey, Jackson Chief of Police, will dedicate the memorial boulder.

“We’ve got a 2,000 pound rock because Roger was a rock,” Austin said. “I mean he was just a rock solid man.”

According to Austin, Fields was a role model and a man to be emulated.

“You just can’t say enough good things about Roger and the way he invested--he didn’t spend--he invested his life in this area,” he said.

The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. It is open to the public.
