Rep. Jason Smith (MO-8) beat four challengers and will return to Congress for two more years.

There were few surprises in southeast Missouri following Tuesday’s midterm election, and Republicans were the big winners.

As expected, Congressman Jason Smith (R) beat four opponents to win reelection to Congress. Smith won with 66 percent of the vote.

Missouri auditor Tom Schweich (R) faced only token opposition in the only statewide race on the ballot. He won 74 percent of the vote.

Kathy Swan (R) cruised to victory in her reelection campaign for the Missouri House of Representative in District 149, which includes Cape Girardeau. Swan gathered 69 percent to beat Gary Gaines (D) and Greg Tlapek (L).

The last Democratically-held Missouri House district in Southeast Missouri has turned to the GOP. Don Rone (R) captured Democrat Steve Hodges’ former district. Rone beat Bill Burlison (D).

Shelley Keeney (R) is going back to the Missouri House of Representatives. The Republican who represents Bollinger, Madison and south Perry County bested Charles Elrod (D) by gaining nearly three-quarters of votes cast. Meanwhile, representative Tila Hubrecht (R), who represents Stoddard County and parts of Scott County, won reelection over Ryan Holder (D).

Cape Girardeau voters choose to extend a 1/8 cent fire sales tax. Sixty percent of voters chose to extend the tax which funds public safety.
