Tornado Alley Moves Eastward

Eastern Missouri can expect a lot more severe weather this Spring, according to recent weather predictions.

The drought-ravaged states of Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas are traditionally considered “Tornado Alley.” This, combined with the clash of warm and cold temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, has pushed Tornado Alley towards eastern Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.

Professor Tony Lupo is Chair of Atmospheric Science at the University of Missouri. He says this is unusual, but not unexpected.

“The tornado alley shift has to do mainly with where the dryness is now, and where the storms seem to be going,” Lupo said. “And right now the traditional tornado alley is bone dry. The storm track seems to be bringing things a little further to the east.”

Lupo urges residents in the new path to prepare for severe weather they may not be used to.

“During severe weather season, make sure that you know where in your house to go for a severe weather event. Or know where the small rooms are, near the center of the house, on the lowest floor. And make sure that you have a good supply in case severe weather does hit your location,” Lupo said.
