Two-Minute Drill: Blomquist Takes Seventh at USATF Junior Nationals

Southeast Athletics

Southeast Missouri State freshman Logan Blomquist finished seventh in the discus at the 2017 USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships last Saturday in Sacramento, California.

Blomquist recorded a throw of 176' 7" (53.82m) on his third attempt. That throw surpassed his previous best throw of 174' (53.03m). Blomquist now has the sixth and eighth-best discus marks in school history.

Gabriel Oladipo Jr. (Unattached) won the event with a throw of 59.97 meters.

Blomquist, a native of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, was named the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year earlier this spring.

Meanwhile, the Redhawks men's and women's cross country teams added nine athletes for the upcoming 2017 season. Jane Boessen, Adrienne Brauer, Kendall Long and Cheyenne Wells join the women's team, while Chris Durr, Trevor Falco, Charlie Samarzich, Hunter Darnell and Austin Perkins join the men's squad.

Four signees will join the women’s team that finished second place in the OVC last year and lost only one athlete from its top seven to graduation. Cross country coach Ryan Lane expects the newcomers to make an immediate impact. The group includes a local product, Cheyenne Wells, from Woodland High School in Marble Hill, who was All-State in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter events and qualified for the Cross Country State Championships all four years.

On the men’s side, a large recruiting class will re-fuel a roster after a number of graduations from last year’s squad. The signing class features a pair of past state champions.  Trevor Falco won the Arkansas 2A Track & Field championship in the 3200 as a senior, as well as the 2A Cross Country championship. Austin Perkins, from Fort Zumwalt East, was the Missouri Class 4 champion in the 800 meter.
