Two-Minute Drill: Redhawk Men's Basketball on Winning Streak

Southeast Missouri State University
Denzel Mahoney

The Redhawks men’s basketball team entered this week on a four-game winning streak, their first four-game streak since the 2013-14 season. Heading into the week, the men were in a tie for first place in the OVC West Division.

Last week, the Redhawks won a pair of games on the road, defeating first-place Murray State 75-74 on Thursday, followed by an 82-71 win at Austin Peay on Saturday. It was only the second time in school history that Southeast has swept both games of the Murray State/Austin Peay road trip.

Southeast Missouri guard Denzel Mahoney has now been named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for three consecutive weeks.

Mahoney matched his career-high with 23 points at Murray State, followed by a 22 point performance at Austin Peay. He averaged 5 rebounds in the two games and shot 61.5 percent from the field. The freshman from Oviedo, Florida is now averaging 16 points per game in OVC play.

Meanwhile, senior guard Antonius Cleveland continues to cause problems for opponents. He currently ranks sixth in the OVC in two offensive categories: 17.3 points per game and 56 percent field goal percentage. Coming into the week, Cleveland had scored 414 points so far this season, the most in a season for his career, with seven regular season games left to play.

The Redhawks, who are 8-2 at home this season, including 4-0 in conference games, will return to the Show Me Center tomorrow, Saturday, February 4th to host Morehead State. Fans who attend will receive a free special edition Red Out t-shirt, thanks to sponsor SoutheastHEALTH – the shirts will be draped over the backs of 5,000 seats in the Show Me Center. In addition, this year’s SEMO Athletics Hall of Fame induction class will be introduce at halftime of the men’s game – including former head men’s basketball coach Ron Shumate. The women tip-off at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4:15 p.m.
