Southeast Missouri State University
scholar-athlete awards

The Southeast Missouri Department of Athletics honored 220 Scholar-Athletes Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at the Student Recreation Center North for achieving a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

The evening featured remarks by Southeast Missouri State University President Dr. Carlos Vargas, followed by a representative from presenting sponsor SoutheastHEALTH. SoutheastHEALTH has proudly helped celebrate the scholastic achievements of Redhawk student-athletes as a sponsor of this event for the past several years.

Following the dinner, the Southeast Scholar-Athletes were recognized on the court at halftime of the women’s basketball game vs. Murray State.

In addition, 29 Southeast Missouri student-athletes were recognized for earning the Ohio Valley Conference Medal of Honor in the 2015-16 academic year, given to student-athletes who achieve a 4.0 GPA during the academic year.

Football student-athlete Fletcher Evans was awarded the Hamby Award. The award is given annually to the football letterman with the highest GPA. The award is given in honor of former Southeast Missouri line coach Jim Hamby and is sponsored by the Hamby Family.

Baseball student-athlete Matthew Wade received the Jewel Award. The Jewel Award is named after professor of biology Don Jewel. It is given each year to a male athlete with the highest GPA for his career.

A pair of student-athletes were co-recipients of the Trombetta Award, given to a graduating female student-athlete with the highest GPA: Softball’s Nicole Deering and tennis’ Mila Majtan.
