Two-Minute Drill: Softball and Tennis Off to Hot Starts

The Redhawks softball and tennis teams are off to hot starts this spring season.

Southeast Softball has picked up 4 wins over the last seven days, including a 6-1 win at ACC opponent Georgia Tech. The Redhawks, now 14-6 overall, their best start since 1998 when they started off 14-5-1 and the first 20 games. The Redhawks have been led by the hot bat of freshman outfielder Rachel Anderson. Anderson is second in the Ohio Valley Conference with a .483 batting average, as well as three home runs, six triples, and 15 RBI. In the circle, junior pitcher Madeline Krumrey has posted a 1.50 ERA, including two complete game shutouts.

The softball team heads to Lawrence, Kansas this weekend to play five games in three days at the Rock Chalk Challenge.

On the tennis court, the Redhawks have jumped out to an 8-3 record, the second-most wins in the Ohio Valley Conference so far this season. The Redhawks are led by freshman Oleksandra Doroshenko, who was named the OVC Tennis Female Athlete of the Week earlier this week, her second weekly award of the season. She is the first Redhawk to collect multiple weekly honors in the same season since 2007. The Redhawks are currently on a three-match winning streak, and will open OVC play today at Eastern Kentucky.

Meanwhile, the Redhawks baseball team picked up a big win on Wednesday over the in-state rival Missouri State Bears. Senior center fielder Dan Holst hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give Southeast the 5-4 victory. The Redhawks will continue their homestand this weekend with a three-game conference series against UT Martin. The series will begin at 6 p.m. tonight, followed by 2pm first pitch Saturday and a 1pm first pitch Sunday.
