Two-Minute Drill: Student-Athletes Commit to Southeast on National Signing Day

Southeast Missouri State University
Coach Tom Mautkewicz

Last Wednesday, February 1st, a total of 34 students signed National Letters of Intent to play football at Southeast Missouri in 2017.

The 2017 class, which marks the largest under head coach Tom Matukewicz, includes players representing eight different states. This year's signees also include 12 mid-year transfers who enrolled at Southeast this semester and will go through spring drills.

Mautkewicz said about the signing class: "We wanted to bring some players in at semester that can have an instant impact on our team. We were able to add 12 recruits that will now be able to go through spring ball. We also had some really high level high school kids with multiple offers choose to be Redhawks. Our coaches did a great job early of identifying recruits that are a great fit here. This helped us go head-to-head with other institutions and win for the first time since I have been here."

The Redhawks continued a trend of signing the top talent out of southeast Missouri, as East Prairie High School wide receiver Deverance Jones and North County High School tight end Devon Scott will join the SEMO Football program next Fall. In addition, the program added five signees from the St. Louis area.

By position, the largest group of signees was at defensive back, with seven signees, followed by six wide receivers. The Redhawks signed five linebackers, five offensive linemen and five defensive linemen.

The Southeast women’s soccer team also wrapped up their 2017 recruiting class. The Redhawks signed six future Redhawks to the soccer program.
