Vintage Horror, Progressive Rock, And Surrealist Fiction Informs The Music Of Wax Fang

Karate Body Records

The latest EP by Louisville-based band Wax Fang is titled “Mirror, Mirror” and singer/guitarist Scott Carney says having just read a collection of short stories by the Argentine magical realist author Jorge Luis Borges influenced the themes explored on it.

“He was not a fan of mirrors,” Carney said. “He was afraid of them or something, because they multiplied people.”

The music conjures notions of progressive rock both in terms of theatricality and song structure, which includes Carney’s epic guitar solos. He said that sometimes they come to him rather easily, and other times it’s a collaborative effort from the entire band, pitching ideas until it sounds just right.

Carney admires the work of a lot of classic rock guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, and Robert Fripp, especially when paired with Brian Eno.

Carney enjoys wordplay and old horror movies, and those interests intersect on the track “Dawn of the Dead of the Night of the Hunter,” a title that snuggly holds the title of three films, Dawn of the Dead, Dead of Night, and Night of the Hunter.

“I’m a fan of stringing things together, and just playing with words,” Carney said. “I’ve done lyrics in the past where you can find expressions where one ends with a word and the next expression will pick up with that word, and you can kind of chain them into a new idea.”

Wax Fang’s “Mirror, Mirror” EP is out now on Karate Body Records. Carney says a new full length album from Wax Fang should be released in spring or early summer.
