Winter Weather Returns To Southeast Missouri

National Weather Service

The storm that is dumping snow across the Plains will bring snow, sleet and freezing rain to southeast Missouri and southern Illinois.

But our region should avoid most of the more severe weather. Snow and sleet will move into the area after midnight tonight. By Thursday, freezing rain is possible, especially south of Cape Girardeau.

David Blanchard is a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Paducah. He says accumulation will be light around Cape Girardeau.

“I’d say in the Cape area, maybe a couple of tenths of an inch is possible mainly in the morning between sunrise and noon,” Blanchard said. “And that’s pretty much it. As far as ice accumulation, not anything to speak of in the Cape area.”

Blanchard says most of the ice will accumulate elsewhere.

“It will be affecting areas west of us with a lot more snowfall and freezing rain. For example, St. Louis, they’re looking to be hit fairly hard with a freezing rain event in addition to snow and sleet. It’s just not going to affect our area that significantly. It’s just luck of the draw where we’re located,” Blanchard said.

Carter, Ripley and Wayne Counties will see heavier accumulations of freezing rain.
