When you think "hiking in Southeast Missouri," you might think Fall foliage or Spring buds, or even lush summertime greenery, but hiking during the winter months has its own special appeal! Trails aren’t typically crowded during the winter, so you get a welcome dose of peace and quiet. Visibility is enhanced by the bare trees; without the greenery of summer and the brightly colored Fall leaves, you can see the trail winding up and down ridges you wouldn’t notice with leaves blocking the view. You might even make some new friends on a wintry hike...certain birds visit only this time of year, and there is unique fungi apparent during this season only. Hike at night to hear owls, who are breeding and raising their young in the wintertime. During the winter, animals spend more time foraging for food, so you might see more wildlife than you would at other times of the year. Use what you learned at the Nature Center’s Winter Tree ID and read the buds, branch direction, bark and more to identify trees on your hike.
