The city of Cape Girardeau is working to create a community album through citizen photo submissions. As many current and potential residents reportedly look to the city’s online resources, officials wanted to include more of residents’ personal experiences in addition to the city’s current service- and department-based content.
Public information officer, Nicolette Brennan says they have seen a lot of interest in the project so far.
“We’ve already had several submissions: some aerial shots of the city in the 1950’s. And what fun is that going to be to compare it to the aerial photos of today?” says Brennan. “We’ve had some folks submit some VIP photographs back to Gerald Ford visiting the Cape Girardeau Airport back in the 70’s.”
The idea came while the city was gathering stories from the south Cape neighborhood through a video project.
“As we were hearing all of these wonderful stories, we thought, ‘well, why don’t we open this up a little bit bigger?’” says Brennan.
Brennan explains that a big part of what life is like in Cape Girardeau are the memories that individuals and families have in their personal photo collections.
The community album will be made available to the public, both online and in a printed version to be housed at City Hall.
The first round of photo submissions are due by April 6. To submit content, visit the city’s facebook page, email them at publicinfo@cityofcape.org, or call city hall at 573-339-6391.
