Learn About Life in Cape Girardeau at the Cape River Heritage Museum

Visit Cape

Learn a rich history of legends, superstition, folklore and symbolism as you decorate eggs in the Ukrainian Style with dyes and meaningful designs in a wax resist process, this afternoon (March 20) at Crisp Museum from 1-4 p.m.

With 40 million albums sold and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, the one and only REO Speedwagon will electrify audiences in concert at the Show Me Center this Friday, March 23, joined by Styx and Don Felder, the former lead guitarist of the Eagles.

Hop on the dance floor and join Cape Ballroom for a Friday night dance, held every Friday evening at the American Legion Hall. Each week a different dance is taught followed by social dancing; no partner is needed as you learn, dance and have fun.

The Cape River Heritage Museum is opening their doors for their 2018 season, and in this museum, housed in a former firehouse and police station, you can learn all about life in Cape Girardeau. Colorful wall-sized paintings illustrate what Cape Rock looked like when the Mississippian people lived on the banks of the river and what our riverfront looked like just a few hundred years later in the age of the steamboat. Particular attention has been paid to the Girardots, the very first settlers of our river town, and they come to life dressed in historically accurate clothings lovingly sewn by museum volunteers. Other exhibits include information on what life during World War II was like in Cape Girardeau, including spotlights on the first local men to enlist and ration books. Exhibits are refreshed every year, so make sure to add this special spot to your springtime list!
