Missouri Gas Prices Lowest In The Nation

Missouri’s gas prices are the lowest in the nation at $2.21 per gallon, according to the website gasbuddy.com.

Gas in Cape Girardeau isn’t quite that low - most stations are charging between $2.29 and $2.39 for regular unleaded.

Mike Right from the American Automobile Associationattributes the low gas prices to a decrease in the cost of crude oil, an increase in oil production, and flat demand.

“There’s a basic disconnect between the supply and demand - disconnect from the point of view of the producers. There’s more product out there than there needs to be in their mind and consequently when you get too much of a thing and not enough demand, the price goes down to attract more demand,” Right said.

Right says Missouri’s gas prices are always among the lowest in the nation because the state has low gas taxes, competition among retailers, and easy access to petroleum products.

“While we don’t have any refining operations in the state of Missouri, we certainly have them close by as well as a network of pipelines that criss-cross the state that gets the product to us relatively inexpensively,” Right said.

Retail gasoline prices should remain low throughout the upcoming holiday season. If crude oil prices continue to drop, Right expects a gallon of gas to drop below two dollars by the end of the year.
