A number of Redhawk student-athletes have earned awards over the past week.
Alexis Brawner and McKinzie Jones represented Southeast Missouri women's gymnastics last Sunday at the 2018 USA Gymnastics Women's Collegiate National Championships individual event finals in Texas.
Brawner tied for sixth on the vault, and Jones tied for third on beam, and both earned First Team USA Gymnastics All-American honors. Brawner also earned second team All-American honors on bars and floor, and McKenna Stanley was awarded second team honors on bars.
In track & field, sophomore Jonno Engelking was named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced Wednesday morning.
Engelking placed first in javelin last weekend at Ole Miss, with a personal-best and school-record throw of 232-05 (70.84m). He now leads the OVC in javelin and is 11th in the nation.
On Monday, Southeast Missouri senior right-handed pitcher Carlos Vega was named adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week.
Vega pitched nine innings and allowed one unearned run while striking out nine at Jacksonville State (Apr. 14). The Redhawks beat the Gamecocks, 4-1, in 10 innings during the series finale. He improved his record to 6-3 this year and lowered his league-best ERA to 1.64. Vega retired 12 of the final 16 hitters he faced.
The Redhawks return to Capaha Field this weekend for a three-game series against Murray State. The series begins this evening at 6 p.m., and tonight’s game will feature a free tailgate presented by The Bank of Missouri and Kohlfeld Distributing.
