Opponents of Cape Girardeau’s Urban Deer Hunting Ordinance are beginning preparations for the April 2nd vote.

Thursday evening, members of Keep Cape Safe met at the Cape Public Library to discuss upcoming plans.

According to Keep Cape Safe organizer Dr. Stephen Stigers the organization has no animal rights donors or members, just local citizens wanting to stand up to, what they believe is, “a bad ordinance.”

“I think our biggest challenge is the ballot wording,” Stigers said. “I think it’s potentially confusing to some people to have to vote yes, which in effect means voting against bow hunting in the city.”

Stigers says upcoming plans involve spreading the word in order to obtain the “yes” vote in April.

“We’re trying to get the word out to get more folks on board with fundraising and to let more folks be aware of the issues involved. We want to let people know that it will be on the April 2nd ballot. We also want people to know that in order to vote to repeal the ordinance they have to vote yes.”

The Cape Girardeau City Council approved the bow hunting ordinance last year, but Stigers and other opponents gathered almost 4,000 petition signatures to put the issue before voters.

Stigers and Keep Cape Safe members will meet again in two or three weeks to make further preparations.
