Voters Reject Use Tax In Cape Girardeau

Cape Girardeau voters soundly rejected a use tax in Tuesday’s election. They also reelected mayor Harry Rediger and chose two new city councilmembers.

Voters in the cities of Cape Giradeau and Jackson, and in Cape Girardeau County, all rejected a use tax that would have applied to the purchase of items bought outside of Missouri but used within the state if the retailer does not charge a sales tax. It largely applies to internet purchases.

Harry Rediger cruised to re-election, beating challenger Walter White with 76% of votes cast.

The City Council will welcome two new members. Business owner Joe Uzoaru beat Teresa Robinson to represent Ward 1, while Shelly Moore defeated Rocky Everett in Ward 2, which represents much of downtown.

Terri Tomlin, T. Wayne Lewis, and Bruce Thomas won election to the Jackson School Board.

Turnout was low. Only 14 percent of registered voters showed up at the polls.
