Almost Yesterday

Almost Yesterday is a glimpse into the rich history of our region. Dr. Frank Nickell takes listeners on a journey to specific moments in time, such as the first radio broadcast on KFVS, the history of Farmington’s Carleton College, and the short-lived safari on a Mississippi River island. A gifted storyteller and local historian, Dr. Nickell’s wit and love for the past are combined with sounds and music that augment his narrative.

On Saturday, June 7, 2008, Almost Yesterday received First Place in the "Special Programs" category at the Missouri Broadcasters Association Awards Banquet in Kansas City, Missouri.

Almost Yesterday airs every Wednesday at 7:31 a.m. and 5:18 p.m.

Local support for Almost Yesterday is provided by Hutson's Fine Furniture & Mattress in downtown Cape Girardeau.

It seems like Almost Yesterday that the Show Me Center was dedicated in Cape Girardeau. The ribbon cutting for the $13.5 million facility was held on August 20, 1987. One thousand red, white and blue balloons were released by the crowd and a large number of city, state and local dignitaries were on-hand for the festivities.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes, Missouri Speaker of the House of Representatives Bob Griffin, State Senator John Scott and former Missouri Governor Christopher "Kit" Bond were present and made comments.

It seems like almost yesterday when the Cape Girardeau Police Department encountered a tragic and fatal shooting. It was March 10, 1961. Officers could not have been more surprised when they pulled two men over for acting suspiciously in the local Krogers grocery store and the men immediately opened fire upon them.

Police officer Herbert Goss was hit with one of the first shots. Patrolman Donald Crittenden was hit in the abdomen -- both men quickly rushed to the hospital. Tragically, both men died.

It seems like almost yesterday that the 1952 Cape Girardeau Junior American Legion baseball team, The Mainliners, came close to the youthful dream of a birth in the American Legion World Series.

The 17 and under team completed a perfect season -- 18 wins, no losses. They rolled through the zone tourney, the state championship and set out for Altus, Oklahoma, where they had been eliminated in 1951. But here in 1952, they won their first game, defeating Topeka, Kansas, and then captured the regional championship by defeating the host team, Altus.

It seems like almost yesterday that Southeast Missouri State University graduate Linda Godwin lifted off into space. She operated her first shuttle assignment in April 1991 as a mission specialist. The flight lasted nearly six days as the crew conducted a space walk to deploy equipment to detect gamma rays in the universe. Godwin's second trip to space was in April 1994 in which she helped launch equipment to better observe the effects of carbon monoxide on earth's surface and atmosphere. Her third flight was in March 1996 and was the third docking mission to the Russian Space Station.
